For the next five years, with inflation at an average of 1.39%, lower than the average of 4% in the last five years
The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) projected in Panama will moderate inflation until 2020. The change in consumer prices, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), will be located at 0.4% in 2016, 1.1% in 2017, 1.8% in 2018, 1.9% in 2019 and 1.7% in 2020.
These projections contrast with the estimates of the International Monetary Fund, warning that inflation for Panama will be 2% this year.
INFLATION IN JANUARY 2016
In January 2016, ten of the twelve groups that make up the CPI showed increases and two recorded declines, reveals a recent report by the Comptroller General of the Republic.
The groups that had the largest price increase in the first month of this year were telecommunications services, which rose 1.3%, education services (0.5%), restaurants and hotels (1.0%) and food (0.4% ).
According to the Comptroller General’s Office, which further boosted prices of communications was the rise in the value of mobile telephony (10.1%) equipment.
In restaurants and hotels, says the official report, the increase was mainly due to increased prices of meals outside the home. In the food group, it reveals the Comptroller was influenced by the increase in meat prices.
In January 2015, also they showed price increase education services (0.5%), alcoholic and snuff beverages (0.4%), furniture, household items and routine household maintenance (0.2%), recreational activities and culture (0.2%), goods and services (0.2%), clothing (0.1%) and health (0.1%).
For its part, they showed decreases in prices for housing services, water, electricity and gas (-1.6%) and transport (-0.2%), due to the decrease in electricity rates and fuel, respectively.
